ABSTRACT:A wide range of research uses patterns of genetic variation to infer genetic similarity between individuals, typically referred to as genetic ancestry. This research includes inference of human demographic history, understanding the genetic architecture of traits, and predicting disease risk. Researchers are not just structuring an intellectual inquiry when using genetic ancestry, they are also creating analytical frameworks with broader societal ramifications. This essay presents an ethics framework in the spirit of virtue ethics for these researchers: rather than focus on (...) rule following, the framework is designed to build researchers’ capacities to react to the ethical dimensions of their work. The authors identify one overarching principle of intellectual freedom and responsibility, noting that freedom in all its guises comes with responsibility, and they identify and define four principles that collectively uphold researchers’ intellectual responsibility: truthfulness, justice and fairness, anti-racism, and public beneficence. Researchers should bring their practices into alignment with these principles, and to aid this, the authors name three common ways research practices infringe these principles, suggest a step-by-step process for aligning research choices with the principles, provide rules of thumb for achieving alignment, and give a worked case. The essay concludes by identifying support needed by researchers to act in accord with the proposed framework. (shrink)

At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multi-national data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from (...) social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar was found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-negligible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Overall, the results underscore the importance of morality-related and contextual factors in understanding adherence to public health recommendations during the pandemic. (shrink)

Cet article propose de lire Le commun de la liberté (2022) de Catherine Colliot-Thélène comme une contribution majeure à la manière nouvelle de faire de la philosophie politique propre à ce que l’on peut appeler les « Lumières radicales ». Il part de l’idée que le livre s’inscrit dans le même projet politico-philosophique que La démocratie sans « demos » (2011), celui de reconstruire la démocratie sur une base nouvelle et radicale. Colliot-Thélène propose une défense audacieuse de l’individualisme méthodologique des (...) droits dont elle fait l’élément clé de la grammaire de la politique démocratique, en même temps qu’elle examine les lacunes des systèmes démocratiques existants du point de vue de deux figures symptomatiques, le pauvre et le réfugié. La deuxième partie de la contribution aborde trois aspects qui sont au cœur du Commun de la liberté, à savoir la conception de la propriété, la conception de la citoyenneté et des statuts personnels, et la théorie des droits. El objetivo del artículo es presentar el lugar de la Fiosofía política en el pensamiento contemporáneo. Esto lo haremos mediante tres objetivos más específicos que describen las tres partes del trabajo: (a) delimitar cómo entender hoy la Filosofía Política, (b) presentar alguna de las tradiciones y tendencias más significativas de las últimas décadas, (c) ofrecer una relación de los programas de investigación y autores más relevantes de la actualidad. Este análisis está presidido por la convicción de que junto a las (...) teorías de la ciudadanía, la actualidad de la Filosofía Política está condicionada por la propuesta de Filosofía Moral que inevitablemente la anima. El presente trabajo propone analizar la manera en que Agustín de Hipona recepciona el pensamiento de Tertuliano, autor cristiano latino, también africano, del que lo separan unos 200 años. Las principales menciones al cartaginés tienen lugar en la crítica agustiniana a la concepción de la corporeidad del alma defendida por Tertuliano. A fin de poder analizar los argumentos y los conceptos filosóficos utilizados por el hiponense en el desarrollo de su crítica presentamos, en primer lugar, una breve introducción a Tertuliano (...) (c. 160- c. 220), deteniéndonos en algunos pasajes cruciales de su obra titulada _De anima_ (208/210). En segundo lugar, nos dedicamos a presentar y analizar la discusión que lleva adelante Agustín respecto de la tesis de la corporeidad del alma humana en _De Genesi ad litteram _(finalizado hacia el 415)_,_ y en _De anima et eius origine, _escrita posteriormente, entre 419 y 420. Evaluamos entonces la posición del hiponense respecto de la hipótesis traducionista sobre el alma humana, ciertamente vinculada al corporalismo defendido por Tertuliano. (shrink)

Para el siglo IV d. C. de Aristóteles sólo los tratados de lógica se encontraban disponibles en latín y el conocimiento de otras obras se debió al testimonio de otros. Las traducciones de las Categorías y Sobre la interpretación, de algunas Enéadas de Plotino y la traducción de la Isagoge se debieron a Mario Victorino. Además de lo mencionado debe haber otros accesos a la obra del filósofo macedonio, ya que, para el caso de interés de este artículo, san Agustín (...) tiene obras, como De doctrina cristiana, De dialéctica, La ciudad de Dios, entre otras, en las que o hay menciones explícitas a Aristóteles o sus doctrinas se asemejan mucho. Los objetivos de este trabajo son evidenciar las menciones explícitas que hace de Aristóteles san Agustín en sus obras; exponer los accesos indirectos por medio de otras fuentes a la obra del estagirita que hace el mismo; y presentar el posible uso que hace Agustín de la filosofía del pensador griego. El artículo trata sobre la idea de san Agustín, presente en algunas obras escritas entre los años 394 y 395, de la autónoma posibilidad de la voluntad humana de comenzar el camino de la salvación con la fe y la plegaria, basando la admisión de esta parcial autonomía de la voluntad en las preocupaciones suscitadas en él por el problema de la predestinación. Señala que las probables fuentes literarias son el comentario del Ambrosiáster a la carta a los Romanos y (...) el comentario de Hilario de Poitiers a los salmos. Asimismo se presenta como más verosímil la hipótesis sugerida por la cita de c. ep. Pel. 4.7 y sostenida por alguno, según los cuales los comentarios paulinos atribuidos hoy al Ambrosiáster circulaban bajo el nombre de un cierto Hilario, al que Agustín identificó erróneamente con el obispo galo de Poitiers. La identificación se hizo posible también a causa de la coincidencia de sus doctrinas sobre la gracia y sobre la predestinación. (shrink)

This chapter is written for an audience that is not intimately familiar with the philosophy of animal consumption. It provides an overview of the harms that animals, the environment, and humans endure as a result of industrial animal agriculture, and it concludes with a defense of ostroveganism and a tentative defense of cultured meat.

Анотація. У статті проаналізовані досягнення Соціального Вчительства Католицької Церкви, репрезентовані працями Лева ХІІІ, Пія ХІ, Пія ХІІ, Івана Павла ІІ, що розкривають змістовні характеристики поняття «принцип субсидіарності», його роль і значення в системі християнських цінностей. Принцип субсидіарності робить можливими такі взаємовідносини в соціальному житті, коли спільнота вищого порядку не втручається у внутрішнє життя спільноти нижчого порядку, перебираючи на себе належні тій функції; заради спільного добра, спільного блага вона надає їй у разі потреби підтримку й допомогу, узгоджуючи у такий спосіб її (...) взаємодію з іншими соціальними структурами. Принцип субсидіарності скеровує соціальну практику на утвердження спільного блага в людському співтоваристві. Поширення і застосування принципу субсидіарності протистоїть небезпеці «одержавлення» суспільства та найзагрозливіших проявів колективізму, обмежує абсолютизацію влади, бюрократизацію державних і соціокультурних структур, стає одним із гарантів дотримання прав і свобод громадян своєї країни.
